That comparison can return attention to the object: its form, surfaces, hidden regions and the viewpoints from which people encounter it. The museum provides the historical, scientific, cultural or artistic context. ASCAND provides a visible physical-to-digital process that visitors can question.

Use the digital model to direct attention back to the object
A reconstruction is related to the physical object, but it is not the object itself.
It is a geometric representation derived from captured evidence. What can be reconstructed depends on what the camera or selected capture method can observe, how the object appears under the capture conditions and how that evidence is interpreted computationally.
This distinction creates useful questions for museum learning:
- Which physical features are also recognizable in the model?
- Which regions are incomplete, simplified or uncertain?
- Which surfaces were visible as the object rotated?
- Which details depend on material, illumination or viewpoint?
- What can the digital representation help us examine?
- What knowledge still depends on the object, its documentation and museum interpretation?
The digital result should not silently replace the object encounter. It can instead make representation itself visible. Visitors can examine how a physical source, captured evidence and reconstructed geometry relate without treating them as equivalent.
The same boundary applies to meaning. Shape data does not establish an object’s date, maker, use, authenticity, ownership, cultural significance or ethical context. Those claims depend on museum knowledge and other evidence.

The strongest prompts have an observable relationship at their center. They invite visitors to look, predict, compare and explain rather than guess what answer the facilitator expects.
Close looking
- What shapes, edges, openings and surface changes can you identify?
- Which features become visible only when you change your viewing position?
- What would you record before the object begins to rotate?
Prediction
- Which areas do you expect the fixed camera to observe?
- Which regions may remain hidden or ambiguous?
- What feature do you expect to be easiest or most difficult to reconstruct?
Visibility
- How does rotation change the visible outline?
- Which recesses or undersides remain difficult to see?
- Does every visible photograph reveal the same geometric information?
Surface response
- Where is the object easy to distinguish from its background?
- How do highlights, low contrast or visual texture affect what the camera records?
- What changed between direct observation and camera observation?
Comparison
- Where do the physical object and model correspond?
- Where do they differ?
- Is a difference in the object, the evidence, the reconstruction or the way the result is displayed?
Interpretation
- What evidence supports your explanation?
- What other explanation might fit the same observation?
- What museum context is needed before making a claim about the object?
Uncertainty
- What cannot be concluded from this result?
- What additional view, observation or source would help?
- When would direct examination or measurement be more appropriate than model inspection?
These questions can be adapted to an exhibition theme or learning purpose. They do not establish a particular visitor age, curriculum connection, duration or learning outcome.

Structure participation from encounter to reflection
1. Encounter the object and its context
Introduce the approved object or replica and explain why it is part of the activity. Establish what visitors may do, what they should not do and which interpretive questions the museum wants to explore.
2. Observe before capture
Invite close looking from permitted viewpoints. Visitors can record visible features, possible hidden regions and aspects they believe will matter to the reconstruction.
3. Make a prediction
Ask visitors to predict what the fixed camera will observe as the object rotates. A useful prediction includes a reason, not just a preferred outcome.
4. Observe structured capture
During ASCAND capture, the smartphone remains fixed while the coded turntable rotates the object. Visitors can follow how the changing view supplies structured evidence without moving the camera around the object.
5. Inspect and compare
Review the available reconstruction as evidence. Compare it with the prediction and the physical source. Identify correspondence, missing regions, unexpected geometry and open questions before explaining causes.
6. Explain, reflect and return to the object
Build a claim from specific observations. Distinguish what is visible from what is inferred, state what remains uncertain and look again at the physical object. Decide whether another investigation would answer a meaningful question.
The facilitator supports the sequence, protects the object and activity boundaries, and helps keep observation separate from interpretation. Visitors contribute predictions, observations, comparisons and explanations. The exact division of responsibilities must fit the museum’s approved program.

Make interpretation a shared, evidence-based conversation
A facilitated discussion can separate four layers that are easily blended:
- Observation: What can we identify directly in the object, captured evidence or reconstruction?
- Possible explanation: What process or condition might account for the observation?
- Museum context: What verified knowledge changes how the object or result should be understood?
- Open question: What remains uncertain, and what evidence would help?
This structure gives visitors permission to revise their thinking. Someone may predict that rotation reveals every surface, then notice that an underside or deep recess remains outside the camera’s view. Another visitor may notice an unexpected region in the model and propose more than one explanation.
The facilitator does not need to treat every incomplete result as a success. Some results may be unsuitable for the intended discussion. The educational value comes from a well-framed inquiry, interpretable evidence and responsible facilitation—not from claiming that every technical problem is automatically a learning opportunity.
When the result is useful, ask visitors to point to the evidence behind a claim. When the evidence is ambiguous, name the uncertainty. When the question is historical or cultural rather than geometric, return authority to the museum’s interpretation and sources.

Change one condition when a second investigation adds value
A second capture is useful when it tests a question—not merely because repetition is possible.
The group might compare a locally approved change in object orientation, illumination, framing or another relevant condition. To make the comparison interpretable:
- state the question;
- record the first conditions and result;
- choose one purposeful change;
- keep other relevant conditions as consistent as practical;
- compare the same observable features;
- explain what the comparison supports and what it does not.
Different scan types gather different forms of evidence. Vision, Laser, Combo and Multi-Scan workflows should not be treated as interchangeable buttons or as guaranteed routes to completeness. Any Laser use in a visitor setting requires current product, safety, supervision and institutional verification before it becomes part of an activity.
A justified decision not to repeat the capture can also demonstrate good inquiry. If the next question requires direct measurement, another documentation source or expertise outside the activity, another scan may add little.

Technical feasibility is only one part of a museum decision.
Before publishing or delivering an activity, verify:
The object
- status as an original, replica, teaching object, handling item or other approved material;
- conservation, handling, movement, security and environmental requirements;
- cultural sensitivity, community protocols and interpretive responsibilities;
- technical suitability for the proposed capture method.
The people
- intended audience and facilitator responsibilities;
- access, accessibility and reasonable-adjustment requirements;
- safeguarding, photography, consent and privacy requirements;
- visitor contact with the object, equipment and digital result.
The activity
- approved learning purpose and interpretive context;
- station layout, equipment, platform access and supervision;
- current operating and safety requirements;
- fallback plan when capture or processing does not support the intended discussion.
The digital result
- rights to capture, process, display, publish, modify or distribute;
- metadata, attribution and contextual information;
- access, retention, deletion and long-term preservation decisions;
- review before the result is used in interpretation, education or public communication.
These decisions belong to the institution and the specific object, audience and use. This page does not provide conservation approval, rights clearance, a risk assessment, an accessibility plan or a public-operation policy.
