A useful 3D scanning lesson begins with a learning objective—not with the instruction to produce a model.

This archive is the canonical home for verified ASCAND learning activities. Each published lesson should identify what learners will investigate, which prerequisites and materials are required, what the facilitator must prepare, how the activity proceeds and what evidence learners will produce or examine.

The reconstructed model may be part of that evidence, but it is not automatically the learning outcome. Learners might compare prediction with observation, explain why geometry is incomplete, investigate scale or visibility, trace a computational transformation, or decide when engineering work requires measurement and CAD remodeling.

Only complete, reviewed activities should appear here as verified lesson plans. A promising idea, subject connection or attractive scan can inspire a future lesson, but it should not be presented as classroom-ready until its dependencies and evidence have been checked.

“Verified” must mean more than complete-looking copy

A lesson plan can look polished while leaving the most important questions unanswered. Verification should make the activity inspectable before an educator commits classroom time to it.

Every verified lesson should have:

  • a clear learning objective;
  • defined prerequisites;
  • a complete materials and preparation list;
  • an activity sequence that distinguishes learner actions from facilitator actions;
  • facilitator notes for likely decisions, uncertainties and handovers;
  • an explicit description of the evidence learners will observe, record or create;
  • current technical dependencies and links to canonical operating guidance;
  • identified safety, privacy, accessibility, safeguarding and supervision checks;
  • an activity version, review status and revision information.

These elements do not prove that a lesson will work identically in every setting. They show what has been defined and reviewed, and what the receiving educator must still verify locally.

If editorial states such as draft, pilot, verified or retired are introduced, they must have documented meanings and responsible review behavior. Until that governance exists, do not use status labels as decorative confidence signals. Publish only what can be supported by the current evidence and clearly name anything still requiring verification.

Every lesson should disclose what an educator needs to decide

An archive card should help an educator decide whether to open a lesson. The detail page should provide enough information to plan, review and adapt it responsibly.

On the archive card

Show the lesson title, learning objective, subject lens, required prior knowledge, essential materials, evidence type and current review status. Add grade, age, duration, standards or accessibility labels only when the individual activity supports them.

On the lesson detail page

Provide:

  1. Learning objective: what learners should be able to observe, reason about, explain or create.
  2. Prerequisites: prior knowledge, equipment, platform access, prepared files and facilitator competence.
  3. Materials and preparation: physical objects, station configuration, learner materials and fallback evidence.
  4. Activity sequence: learner and facilitator actions in a meaningful order.
  5. Facilitator notes: questions to ask, decisions to watch, common misunderstandings and appropriate stopping points.
  6. Learning evidence: observations, annotations, comparisons, explanations, models or design records that make reasoning visible.
  7. Adaptation notes: what may be changed without losing the objective and which changes require renewed review.
  8. Dependencies and status: current documentation, related resources, version, review date or other verified status information.

Downloads should support the lesson rather than replace its explanation. A worksheet without the objective, context and facilitator guidance is not a self-contained lesson plan.

Start with the learning purpose—not the equipment

The same physical-to-digital workflow can support different subjects because each subject asks different questions of the evidence.

Mathematics

Choose a mathematics lesson when learners will investigate reference frames, rotation, scale, similarity, cross-sections, area, volume, variation or uncertainty. Keep physical measurements separate from values derived from reconstructed geometry.

Physics and optics

Choose a physics or optics lesson when learners will investigate image formation, illumination, reflection, visibility, occlusion, silhouettes or triangulation. A visually convincing model does not by itself establish an optical explanation.

Computing and AI

Choose a computing lesson when learners will trace inputs, coded orientation information, segmentation, transformations, representations, reconstruction logic, confidence or failure. Keep deterministic computation, machine vision and AI assistance conceptually distinct.

Engineering and making

Choose an engineering lesson when learners will define requirements, use observed geometry as reference, identify critical measurements, choose mesh or CAD work, prototype, fabricate, test and revise. A reconstruction is not automatically finished engineering geometry.

Subject relevance is not the same as standards alignment. A lesson should claim a particular standard only after the activity, objective, evidence and assessment have been mapped and reviewed for that context.

Adapt context without breaking the evidence chain

A verified lesson can often be adapted, but the learning objective and evidence relationship must remain visible.

1. Confirm the original objective

State what the published lesson expects learners to investigate. If the new purpose is substantially different, treat the result as a new activity rather than silently relabeling the original.

2. Verify the prerequisites

Check prior knowledge, equipment, access, prepared examples and facilitator readiness. Do not assume that a different learner group or institution has the same starting conditions.

3. Select a suitable object and evidence

Choose an object that supports the question and the verified capture setup. Consider stability, size, surface, occlusion, openings, fragility and local restrictions. Preserve fallback evidence where the lesson depends on result inspection.

4. Map meaningful learner roles

Assign responsibility for prediction, setup review, evidence recording, result inspection and explanation. Adapt participation without implying that every learner must operate the same hardware simultaneously.

5. Verify local implementation requirements

Confirm current operating guidance, devices, access, files, supervision, privacy, safeguarding, accessibility, safety and institutional policy.

6. Preserve the comparison logic

If the lesson compares prediction with output, one orientation with another or a physical measurement with a model-derived value, keep that relationship intact. Changing several variables at once can make the intended evidence impossible to interpret.

7. Document the adaptation

Record what changed, why it changed and whether the objective, sequence or evidence changed. A significant modification may require separate review before the adapted activity is described as verified.

Verify the activity in your own setting

Before teaching, confirm:

  • the objective and evidence are appropriate for the learners;
  • prerequisites and materials are actually available;
  • the selected object is suitable for the current setup;
  • the station follows current ASCAND documentation;
  • devices, browser, network and platform access have been checked;
  • file access, naming, storage and result handover are understood;
  • fallback evidence is available if live capture or processing is unavailable;
  • supervision, safety and any Laser-related requirements are verified;
  • privacy, safeguarding and institutional rules have been reviewed;
  • accessibility needs and reasonable adaptations have been considered;
  • the facilitator knows when to stop, redirect or defer the activity.

Completing a published lesson plan does not replace these checks. Local conditions determine whether and how the activity can be used.

A lesson plan is specific evidence—not a universal promise

Unless verified for the individual activity, a lesson plan should not claim:

  • suitability for a particular age, grade or learner group;
  • alignment with a named curriculum or educational standard;
  • a fixed duration, class size, staffing ratio or station capacity;
  • guaranteed access through every device, browser or network;
  • privacy, safeguarding or accessibility compliance for an institution;
  • permission for unsupervised operation or Laser use;
  • guaranteed processing time or reconstruction quality;
  • guaranteed engagement, attainment or other educational outcome;
  • safe fabrication or performance of a learner-designed object.

Archive filters and badges are claims too. “Beginner,” “45 minutes,” “Grade 8,” “accessible,” “standards aligned” or “no preparation” must be supported by the activity record rather than added because they make browsing easier.

The lesson archive should therefore grow through verified resources, not through category volume. A smaller collection with explicit objectives and dependencies is more useful than a large collection of lightly described ideas.

Choose an activity you can verify and support

Select a lesson whose learning objective matches the evidence you want learners to examine. Read its prerequisites, preparation, facilitator notes and implementation status before adapting it.

If no verified lesson fits, begin with the curriculum framework, choose one subject lens and use the classroom workflow to design a bounded investigation. Supporting worksheets, preparation guidance and downloads belong in Teacher Resources once their purpose and version are clear.

The aim is not to make scanning appear in every lesson. It is to use physical-to-digital evidence where it gives learners something meaningful to predict, inspect, explain or improve.
