Teacher resources are the materials around an activity that help learners make decisions, record evidence and explain what they observe.

They may support preparation before capture, distribute meaningful roles, focus observation during the workflow, structure comparison after processing or help learners document a revised investigation. Their value comes from making the learning process clearer—not from adding more pages to print.

This page is the canonical library for verified ASCAND teacher guidance and supporting materials. A resource should appear here only when its purpose, intended user, dependencies, format, version and review status are clear. A title or attractive thumbnail is not enough to establish that a file is current, suitable or ready for classroom use.

Teacher resources complement the lesson-plan archive and classroom workflow. They do not replace a complete activity, current operating guidance or the educator’s local judgment.

The library should also make the relationship between materials visible. A preparation checklist may belong to several activities, while an evidence sheet may depend on one particular comparison. A translated learner sheet may share its purpose with the source version but still require its own language and revision information. Showing these relationships helps educators assemble a coherent activity and helps maintainers identify which lessons may be affected when a resource changes.

Choose the resource by the teaching task

Start with what the educator or learner needs to do. Different teaching tasks require different kinds of support.

Preparation resources

Preparation checklists can help an educator confirm the learning purpose, object, station, access, files, fallback evidence and local requirements. They should point to current instructions rather than repeat technical procedures that may change.

Learner-role resources

Role cards can distribute responsibility for prediction, setup review, evidence recording, result inspection and explanation. They should create meaningful participation rather than simply assigning one learner to “use the scanner” while others wait.

Prediction and observation resources

Prompts can help learners state what they expect to be visible, where geometry may be difficult to observe and which variables they intend to keep controlled. These materials should leave room for a learner’s own reasoning instead of revealing the expected result.

Evidence-recording resources

Tables, annotation sheets and comparison records can preserve what was captured, what was changed and what the reconstruction shows. They should distinguish physical measurement, captured evidence and model-derived values.

Interpretation and reflection resources

Reflection prompts can separate observation from explanation: What is visible? What is missing? Which evidence supports the explanation? What else could account for the result? What should change in the next test?

Follow-up and extension resources

Extension guidance can connect the same evidence to mathematics, physics and optics, computing and AI, or engineering and making. It should not transform a bounded activity into an unsupported claim of complete interdisciplinary or standards coverage.

A teacher resource is not automatically a lesson plan. A lesson plan defines a complete learning activity. A tutorial explains how to perform a verified procedure. Technical documentation states current requirements and operation. Each belongs in its canonical location.

The distinction matters in practice. A capture-observation sheet can remind learners what to notice, but it cannot establish whether the station is correctly assembled. A reflection framework can reveal the quality of a learner’s reasoning, but it cannot by itself define an assessment scheme. A role card can support participation, but it does not establish a safe staffing model or guarantee that a group configuration will work in every setting.

Resources should therefore make modest, precise promises. “Records prediction and observation” is more useful than “complete classroom pack” when the file supports only one part of the activity.

Every resource should explain what it supports

Before an educator opens or downloads a resource, its record should disclose enough information to decide whether it belongs in the activity.

Every published resource should identify:

  • its title and specific purpose;
  • the intended user, such as facilitator, learner or group;
  • the stage of the activity it supports;
  • required prior knowledge, materials or related resources;
  • its file format and whether an editable version is genuinely available;
  • whether it is designed for screen use, printing or both;
  • relevant platform, equipment or workflow dependencies;
  • brief instructions for use;
  • known accessibility considerations and adaptation notes;
  • license, attribution and reuse conditions;
  • language and translation status;
  • version, publication date, content owner and review status;
  • the lesson, workflow or subject pages to which it relates.

These fields prevent a familiar problem: a file remains online after the procedure, terminology or activity around it has changed. Version and dependency information help an educator recognise whether the resource still matches the current context.

Labels such as “editable,” “print-ready,” “accessible,” “beginner,” “no preparation” or “works with any lesson” are factual claims. They should be used only when the resource supports them.

The record should also distinguish the resource page from the resource file. The page explains purpose, context, status and relationships in a form that search engines, AI systems and educators can retrieve. The file is the material used in the activity. A filename alone cannot carry all of that context reliably.

Where more than one format is offered, each format should be checked. A correctly tagged document and an editable presentation are not interchangeable merely because their visible text is similar. Layout, fonts, form fields, page size, printing, links and assistive-technology behavior may differ.

Review educational boundaries

Select resources from the activity outward

Resources should follow the learning design. They should not determine it merely because they are available.

1. Define the learning purpose

State what learners should investigate, compare, explain or improve. A clear purpose makes it possible to reject resources that add activity without supporting the intended reasoning.

2. Identify the activity stage

Decide whether support is needed during preparation, prediction, capture, processing, inspection, explanation, iteration or follow-up. One resource does not need to cover the entire workflow.

3. Select the evidence learners need

Identify what learners must record: a prediction, a physical dimension, a capture condition, an observed feature, a model limitation, a comparison or a revised explanation. Choose a resource that preserves this evidence.

4. Verify prerequisites and dependencies

Confirm that the related lesson, instructions, devices, files and educator knowledge are current and available. Check whether the resource assumes a particular scan method, object type or downstream tool.

5. Choose a usable format

Consider how learners will access, read, annotate and submit the material. Verify printing, editing, language, contrast, text size, keyboard use, assistive-technology behavior and any local accessibility needs rather than assuming suitability from the file format.

6. Adapt without changing the meaning

Wording, layout or examples may be adapted, but the resource must still collect the evidence required by the activity. If a change alters the learning purpose, comparison or interpretation, document it as a substantive adaptation.

7. Record the version and changes

Keep the resource version with the activity record. Note local changes so that later results can be interpreted and useful improvements can be reviewed rather than disappearing into an unnamed classroom copy.

Prepare the decisions learners will make

Good preparation does not remove uncertainty from an inquiry. It removes avoidable confusion so learners can focus on meaningful uncertainty.

Before the activity, a facilitator may need:

  • a readiness checklist linked to current documentation;
  • an object-screening prompt covering stability, size, surface, occlusion, fragility and local restrictions;
  • a role plan that gives every learner an evidence-based responsibility;
  • a prediction prompt tied to the selected subject question;
  • prepared fallback images, models or records if live capture or processing is unavailable.

During the activity, resources can focus attention on the evidence chain:

  • what was kept constant;
  • what was deliberately changed;
  • what the camera could observe;
  • what learners predict the reconstruction will contain;
  • which capture or processing event should be recorded;
  • which claims must wait until the result is inspected.

After processing, learners may need an observation frame before they begin explaining. Asking “What do you see?” before “Why did this happen?” helps prevent a plausible story from replacing evidence.

Resource sheets should not duplicate operating instructions. Current setup, capture, platform and safety guidance belongs in documentation and verified tutorials, where changes can be maintained canonically.

Before the activity

Use educator-facing material to make dependencies visible. Confirm which parts of the workflow learners will perform, which evidence is already prepared and which decisions remain open. If a live result is important, prepare a fallback that supports the same reasoning rather than an unrelated demonstration.

During the activity

Keep prompts short enough to use while observing. A resource should direct attention without turning the workflow into mechanical box-ticking. Learners need time to notice evidence that the author did not predict.

After the activity

Preserve the conditions and version alongside the learner record. This makes comparisons between groups or later iterations interpretable. It also allows the facilitator to distinguish an activity-design problem from a capture, access or resource problem.

A reconstructed model can support inquiry only when learners treat it as evidence to examine.

A useful evidence record may separate:

  1. Prediction: What did the learner expect, and on what basis?
  2. Conditions: Which object, orientation, setup and relevant variables were used?
  3. Observation: What is actually visible in the source evidence or result?
  4. Interpretation: What explanation is consistent with those observations?
  5. Uncertainty: What is unknown, ambiguous or dependent on representation?
  6. Next test: What controlled change could strengthen or challenge the explanation?

This structure works across subject lenses. Mathematics may compare scale, sections or variation. Physics and optics may examine visibility, illumination or surface response. Computing may trace segmentation, transformations and representations. Engineering may compare observed geometry with requirements and direct measurement.

The resource should not tell learners that a smooth or plausible model is correct. It should help them justify a conclusion, identify its limits and propose a purposeful iteration.

Prompts should be written so that incomplete or unexpected results remain usable. “Identify three differences between prediction and result” supports inquiry even when the reconstruction is imperfect. “Confirm that the model is accurate” assumes the conclusion and hides the need for comparison.

Where learners compare results, the resource should ask which variables changed and which remained controlled. A difference between two models cannot be attributed confidently to one cause when the object, lighting, framing, orientation and processing choices all changed at once.

Reflection should also allow a justified decision not to repeat the scan. A learner may conclude that the object is unsuitable, that a critical feature requires direct measurement, or that a different representation is needed. Recognising the boundary of available evidence is a valid outcome of inquiry.

A downloadable file is still a maintained content object

Publishing a PDF, document or template creates an ongoing responsibility. The resource can become misleading when its terminology, links, instructions, dependencies or educational framing no longer match the current system.

Before publication, verify:

  • technical statements against their canonical sources;
  • links and dependencies against the current website and platform;
  • safety, supervision, privacy and safeguarding language;
  • accessibility of both the resource record and the file itself;
  • copyright, attribution, license and permitted reuse;
  • editable and printable behavior in the offered formats;
  • language quality and the status of translations;
  • ownership, review status, version and replacement behavior.

Do not describe a resource as current merely because the file opens. Do not leave superseded versions discoverable without a clear replacement route. Do not silently change a resource that a lesson plan depends on; update the version relationship and review the affected activity.

The website should not imply a formal resource lifecycle, review interval or approval role until those operational decisions have been established. Until then, publication status and ownership remain explicit checks rather than invented workflow.

Resource suitability also remains contextual. A worksheet cannot guarantee accessibility, privacy compliance, a particular lesson duration, a safe activity, device compatibility or a learning outcome.

Downloads also require clear replacement behavior. When a new version corrects a technical statement or changes the evidence collected, linked lesson plans may need review. When a change affects only typography, the educational meaning may remain stable, but the version note should still let an educator identify the file in use.

Translations are separate maintained expressions of the resource. They should preserve technical distinctions and instructional intent, not merely approximate the source wording. A source update should make affected translations visible for review.

If learner information may be entered, photographed, uploaded or retained, the resource must not invent a privacy procedure. It should direct educators to current institutional and platform guidance and collect only information justified by the activity.

Build a coherent activity, not a pile of worksheets

Begin with a verified lesson or a clearly stated curriculum purpose. Decide what learners will investigate and what evidence they need to preserve. Then choose the smallest set of resources that supports preparation, participation, observation, explanation and follow-up.

If a published lesson fits, use its linked resources and verify their versions and local requirements. If no lesson fits, use the curriculum framework and classroom workflow to design a bounded inquiry before creating supporting material.

The resource library should grow only when a real, reviewable item is ready. Until then, it is more trustworthy to show the resource model and planning routes than to display invented downloads.

A coherent set may contain only three items: one facilitator readiness sheet, one learner evidence record and one reflection prompt. More material is not automatically more support. The test is whether each item helps someone prepare a decision, observe evidence, explain a result or document the next step.
