The ASCAND Turntable Extension enlarges the physical surface available to support an object during controlled rotation. It is intended for projects whose footprint needs more room than the standard turntable surface can provide.

The coded turntable remains part of the capture relationship: the object rotates while the camera stays fixed. The extension changes how the object is supported; it does not replace the turntable’s structured motion or the 3D-Scan.Online processing workflow.

A larger platform is not a promise that every larger object can be scanned. Mass, balance, rotational clearance, camera framing, lighting and surface visibility must still work together.

The extended platform provides a broader physical support area for an appropriate object. This can help when the object’s base or footprint does not sit securely on the standard surface. The verified dimensions and permitted use of the current product must define whether it is suitable for a particular project.

Controlled rotation still comes from the ASCAND turntable

The extension works within the coded-turntable setup. The rotating platform continues to move the object through a predictable viewpoint sequence. The coded band remains part of the visual reference used to interpret turntable orientation.

The camera still stays fixed

The phone or camera is positioned before recording and remains steady while the object rotates. A larger object may require the capture station to be reframed, but camera movement during recording would change the controlled relationship on which the workflow depends.

1. Verify the current configuration

Confirm that the Turntable Extension matches the coded turntable and capture configuration you intend to use. Follow the current assembly instructions and check every required support or connection before placing an object on the platform.

2. Evaluate the complete object

Consider footprint, mass, center of gravity, rigidity and overhang—not just width. The object must remain stable throughout a full rotation, and the complete moving assembly must stay within the verified operating guidance.

3. Center and support the object

Position the object so its load is balanced and it cannot rock, slide, flex or change shape. Any additional support must remain secure and should hide as little relevant surface as practical.

4. Reframe and test a full rotation

Adjust the fixed camera so the object and required capture references remain visible. Rotate the unloaded or safely loaded setup through a complete test cycle and check for collisions, edge-of-frame losses, wobble and changing focus.

5. Capture, process and review

Record under stable lighting, upload through the applicable 3D-Scan.Online workflow and inspect the result. Look for missing regions, motion artifacts and surfaces that were never adequately observed.

Platform area is not the same as scannable volume

The diameter of a support surface answers one physical question: how much area is available beneath an object. It does not, by itself, define the largest object the complete ASCAND setup can capture.

A wider object sweeps through a larger area as it rotates. Its corners, handles or projecting features may extend beyond its base and require additional clearance. A taller object changes camera framing and the range over which the complete subject must remain in focus. Moving the camera farther away can place more of the object in frame, but may also reduce the number of image pixels describing smaller features.

The coded reference required by the selected workflow must remain sufficiently visible. Lighting must cover the larger subject consistently, and the camera must observe useful surface evidence throughout rotation. Deep recesses, self-occlusion and the contact area beneath the object remain hidden regardless of platform size.

For these reasons, support footprint, rotational envelope, camera field of view and observable geometry must be evaluated together. Use the extension when it solves a real support-area problem, then verify that the complete capture station still provides useful evidence.

A larger object must still rotate safely and remain observable

Begin with stability. The object’s center of gravity should remain well controlled over the rotation axis, and its base must be supported without rocking. An uneven, flexible or top-heavy object can move even when the motor turns smoothly. That movement changes the object’s relationship to the expected rotation and can reduce the usefulness of captured observations.

Overhang matters as much as footprint. A projecting feature may sweep close to the camera support, background or surrounding equipment. Check the entire rotational path before recording. Do not infer a safe payload or clearance from the photograph; use the verified specification and instructions for the current extension.

Optical suitability remains equally important. Transparent, reflective or very dark surfaces can be difficult to observe. Thin parts may occupy too few pixels, and deep recesses may remain hidden. The underside resting on the platform is not directly visible in a single orientation.

Where appropriate, a second stable orientation can provide complementary observations for a Multi-Scan workflow. The scans still require sufficient overlap and suitable geometry for alignment, and merging cannot guarantee recovery of every unseen region.

The extension creates more room beneath an object. A successful project still depends on safe support, controlled motion and observable surfaces.

Makers

Use the extension when a workshop object needs broader, more stable support for a physical-to-digital experiment. The resulting model can serve as reference material for inspection, modification or fabrication preparation, but functional dimensions and tolerances may still require measurement and CAD work.

Education

Compare standard and extended setups to investigate footprint, balance, scale, framing and visibility. Learners can predict what will remain observable, test the rotation and explain why a larger support surface does not automatically produce a more complete model.

Museums and informal learning

An extended setup may accommodate an approved teaching object or replica with a broader base. Local staff must still decide what may be handled, rotated and recorded. It should not be presented as a conservation, archival or certified digitization system.
