Build one stable observation relationship
An ASCAND capture station is more than a turntable beside a phone. It is a controlled physical relationship among the rotating object, the fixed camera, the support surface, the coded reference, the background and the lighting.
During one capture, the intended change is the object’s rotational orientation. The camera should not move. The object should not shift relative to the platform. The background and illumination should not change unexpectedly. Keeping these relationships stable gives the recorded frames a consistent acquisition structure.
This tutorial helps you prepare and reject an unsuitable setup before recording. It does not perform calibration or prove that every surface can be reconstructed. A stable station reduces avoidable capture variation; it does not guarantee accuracy, completeness or fitness for a later use.
Prepare and position the object
Start with a stable foundation
Build the station on a rigid work surface where the turntable, phone mount, background and lights can remain undisturbed for the complete capture.
Before placing the object:
- Confirm the selected configuration. Use only a documented turntable, attachment and assembly combination.
- Follow current assembly instructions. Verify how the turntable is installed, leveled, powered and operated for the exact revision in use.
- Clear the rotational envelope. The platform, object, supports and cables must not contact the phone mount, background, lights or nearby objects.
- Stabilize the camera support. A flexible desk, loose clamp or easily touched stand can change the view during recording.
- Control cable forces. A charging or power cable must not pull on the phone, turntable or supporting structure.
- Keep the surroundings still. Avoid a background that moves when someone walks past or lights that can be bumped during capture.
The turntable and camera do not need to occupy a particular universal distance or angle. They need a verified relationship that keeps the required subject and reference observable, sharp and stable through the full turn.
Treat the finished arrangement as one station. Marking or documenting the positions of the turntable base, camera support and background can make an accidental change easier to notice. A reference photograph can also help a class, workshop or shared lab return the equipment to the verified arrangement. These records support repeatability; they do not replace the dry run, because a different object can change framing, balance, clearance and lighting.

Prepare and position the object
The object must behave as one rigid subject during capture. If a part moves independently, different frames no longer describe the same geometry in different rotational orientations.
Use this placement sequence:
- Inspect the object for loose, hinged, flexible or rolling parts.
- Choose an orientation that is stable and exposes the surfaces needed from this pass.
- Include any support in the object’s complete rotating envelope.
- Position the object by its widest rotating envelope—not only by how centered it looks from the front.
- Keep the required coded region visible from the camera position.
- Check whether the support hides the base, silhouette or another important surface.
- Verify clearance through a complete rotation before powered operation.
Use only support and securing methods appropriate to the object, platform and current instructions. Do not risk damage to an artifact, surface or turntable to make a difficult object stand upright.
Physical fit is not the same as observability. A stable object can still contain an underside, recess or self-occluded area that the camera never sees. A later capture in another orientation may be necessary, followed by separate reconstruction and registration.

Mount the camera so it cannot move
ASCAND uses relative views created by rotating the object in front of a steady camera. Mount the smartphone rigidly enough that its position and viewing direction remain unchanged for the complete video.
Before framing:
- clean the active camera lens without changing or damaging the device;
- secure the phone in a compatible holder;
- confirm that the holder does not cover the lens or interfere with controls;
- keep the mount outside the platform’s complete rotational envelope;
- arrange cables so they cannot pull the device;
- use the phone orientation supported by the current recording workflow;
- avoid touching the phone, mount, table or turntable during capture.
The correct lens, orientation, distance, height, tilt, zoom, focus and exposure behaviour depend on the verified workflow and device. Do not copy a value from another phone model or infer it from a photograph.
A camera that remains physically fixed is not automatically calibrated. Stability preserves the chosen camera–turntable relationship; calibration and geometric interpretation remain separate responsibilities.
Frame the complete rotating subject and required reference
Set the camera view by observing the entire rotation, not only the object’s starting pose.
The intended frame should preserve:
- the complete object at its widest and tallest visible orientations;
- useful margins around the rotating subject;
- the coded region required by the selected setup and workflow;
- the surfaces needed for the intended reconstruction;
- adequate focus and depth of field across the object;
- separation between the object boundary and background.
Reject the framing if the object leaves the image, touches an edge, becomes too small to provide useful observations, hides the required code or passes through a visibly soft focus region.
Do not move the camera or change zoom after the dry run without repeating the complete check. Changing either modifies the observation geometry and may also alter focus, exposure or image processing.
The coded band provides orientation-reference evidence. Keeping it visible does not turn it into object geometry, certify angular accuracy or prove calibration.
Check framing from the recorded camera view rather than from beside the phone. The operator’s eye may see clearance or code that the lens does not. Pay particular attention to projections that move toward an image edge and to high or low parts that remain soft even when the central surface appears sharp.

Keep the background and lighting stable
The aim is stable computational input, not dramatic product photography. Lighting should allow the object, its boundaries and any method-specific evidence to remain observable without introducing large changes as the object rotates.
Look for:
- illumination that remains consistent throughout the capture;
- sufficient separation between object and background;
- limited background clutter near the object boundary;
- no moving people, screens, curtains or shadows behind the subject;
- no light source that flickers or changes brightness visibly;
- manageable glare, deep shadow or transparency for the selected method;
- no automatic change caused by repeatedly touching or moving the phone.
Surface behaviour matters. A dark, glossy, reflective, translucent or low-contrast object can respond differently from a matte, opaque object under the same station lighting. Vision, Laser and Combo workflows also rely on different evidence. There is therefore no universal background color, lamp count or exposure value that is correct for every object and method.
Make one controlled adjustment at a time, then repeat the framing and rotation check. If the object boundary becomes difficult to distinguish or reflections move across the surface, review the object and method before assuming that processing will correct the capture.
When optional Laser or Combo capture is planned, the wider station must also satisfy the current hardware, alignment and safety instructions for that configuration. Do not add, position or activate laser equipment from this general station tutorial alone. The shared principle remains stability, but method-specific visibility and safety requirements belong to their verified procedures.

Understand silhouette evidence
Test the complete station through one full rotation
Before recording, perform a full-rotation dry run. Use an unpowered check unless the current operating instructions explicitly support another procedure.
- Station stability: The work surface, turntable, phone mount, background and lights do not move.
- Object stability: The object and support remain fixed relative to the platform.
- Clearance: Nothing touches or approaches an obstruction through the full rotation.
- Complete framing: The object remains inside the image with useful margins.
- Reference visibility: The required coded region remains observable.
- Focus: The required visible surfaces remain acceptably sharp.
- Background: The object boundary remains distinguishable without moving clutter.
- Lighting: Illumination remains stable without new glare, flicker or moving shadows.
Stop and correct the setup if any check fails. A different object orientation, turntable configuration, camera position, support, background or lighting arrangement may be needed.
After any correction, restart the dry run from the beginning. Moving the camera can affect framing and focus; moving the turntable can affect clearance and the observed relationship; changing a light can introduce glare elsewhere in the rotation. Rechecking the complete system is more reliable than assuming that a local correction has no other consequence.
Passing the dry run means that the station is physically ready for the verified recording procedure. It does not prove camera calibration, complete surface visibility, dimensional accuracy, successful processing, watertight geometry or downstream readiness.
Station stable? Continue to recording
A prepared capture station holds the camera and surroundings steady while the object rotates predictably on the selected turntable. The object remains stable, the complete subject and required code remain framed, and the background and lighting remain consistent through a full turn.
If the station passes that check, continue to the current recording procedure without changing the arrangement.
