An ASCAND scan video preserves a sequence of views while the object rotates in front of a steady camera. The recording stage should capture the physical relationship you already verified: the same camera position, object placement, turntable configuration, framing, background and lighting.

Complete the capture-station dry run before starting. If the object clips the frame, shifts on the platform, hides the required coded reference or passes through unsuitable lighting, correct the station first. Recording does not repair an unsuitable setup.

This tutorial provides the shared recording discipline for ASCAND workflows. Exact phone settings, controls, capture motion, number of recordings and method-specific requirements must come from the current instructions for the device, turntable and selected Vision, Laser or Combo workflow. Do not infer them from an example video or internal processing description.

Prepare the phone before touching the record control. A preventable interruption can invalidate an otherwise stable capture.

Confirm:

  1. The device and recording workflow are currently supported. Verify the applicable product or platform guidance rather than assuming that any phone or camera app behaves the same way.
  2. There is sufficient available storage. The phone must be able to complete and save the intended recording.
  3. Power is adequate for the full task. If external power is used, its cable must not pull the phone or enter the rotating envelope.
  4. The active lens is clean and unobstructed. Check this without changing the verified mount position.
  5. The supported phone orientation and recording mode are selected. Do not substitute a familiar personal setting for the documented workflow.
  6. Avoidable interruptions are controlled. Calls, notifications, automatic camera changes, screen controls or other events must not interrupt the recording or cause the operator to touch the station.
  7. The surroundings can remain still. People, doors, curtains, screens, daylight and movable lamps should not alter the background or illumination during capture.

ASCAND processing decodes the uploaded video into a time-ordered image sequence. Engineering documentation may describe how those frames are handled internally, but internal frame-rate handling or downsampling does not by itself establish a universal public recording specification. Use only values verified for the current customer workflow.

Preserve the verified camera view

Opening a camera mode can change more than the record control. A different lens, zoom state, orientation, focus behaviour, exposure response or stabilization mode can change framing and the observations contained in the video.

After opening the verified recording workflow:

  • compare the live view with the view that passed the station dry run;
  • confirm that the complete object remains visible through its intended rotation;
  • confirm that the required coded region is observable;
  • check that the important surfaces remain acceptably sharp;
  • look for a new crop, digital zoom, orientation change or image shift;
  • confirm that the object boundary remains distinct from the background;
  • check that the image does not change visibly when you remove your hands from the phone and mount.

If any camera state changes, repeat the full-rotation check. Do not assume that a small adjustment affects only one part of the image. Changing the phone, lens, zoom, orientation or focus can alter framing, sharpness, reference visibility and the effective observation relationship together.

Once the view passes, leave the phone and mount untouched until the recording has finished and the file has been saved.

Begin recording before the capture motion

Use the current operating instructions for the exact equipment and workflow. The shared order is:

  1. Confirm the correct live view and that the station is clear.
  2. Start video recording using the verified control.
  3. Confirm that recording is actually active.
  4. Remove your hands from the phone, mount, table and turntable.
  5. Begin the documented capture motion only after recording has started.

Starting the video first helps preserve the beginning of the intended motion. It also prevents the operator from trying to operate the turntable and camera control at the same instant.

Do not reach across the view, bump the table or steady the object by hand during capture. If operation requires an accessory control, use only the documented method and keep its use from moving the station.

For a powered turntable, follow the current start, stop and power instructions. For Laser or Combo capture, complete the dedicated hardware setup and follow the applicable safety information before activating laser equipment. This general video tutorial does not define laser installation, alignment, operating zones or protective measures.

Record one uninterrupted capture

During the intended motion, the object should rotate as one stable subject while the camera and environment remain unchanged.

Monitor the capture without touching the station. Stop and plan to rerecord if you observe:

  • movement of the phone, mount, turntable base, background or lights;
  • an object or support shifting relative to the rotating platform;
  • contact, wobble or obstruction within the rotational envelope;
  • the object leaving the frame or touching an image edge;
  • loss or obstruction of the coded region required by the workflow;
  • visibly soft focus across required surfaces;
  • a person, hand, cable or other object crossing the useful view;
  • a sudden lighting, exposure, reflection, shadow or background change;
  • recording interruption, application change or uncertain capture state.

Use the complete capture motion, rotation behaviour and recording duration specified by the current instructions. Do not estimate a universal speed or number of turns from this page. Moving too quickly, too slowly or for an incomplete interval may affect the distribution and interpretability of frames, but the correct operating values are configuration-dependent.

An uninterrupted recording is necessary evidence, not proof of a successful reconstruction. The camera can remain stable while a surface is still hidden, reflective, translucent or poorly separated from the background. The selected method and object behaviour still determine what can be observed.

Complete the motion, then stop and save

Allow the documented capture motion to finish before stopping the recording. Use the current turntable instructions where a powered device must be stopped or allowed to complete a cycle.

Then:

  1. stop the recording using the verified control;
  2. wait for the phone to finish saving the file;
  3. confirm that a new video exists and can be opened;
  4. preserve the original file for inspection and upload;
  5. identify it clearly enough to distinguish the object, orientation and method from other captures.

Do not dismantle or substantially alter the station until the saved video has been checked. If it fails, retaining the same setup can make a controlled rerecording easier. If a change is required, repeat the complete station verification before recording again.

Follow current platform guidance for supported file formats, transfer methods, naming and upload limits. Avoid editing, trimming, transcoding, compressing or filtering the source unless the workflow explicitly instructs you to do so. Such changes can remove frames, alter orientation metadata or modify image evidence.

Inspect the saved video before upload

Play the original saved file from beginning to end. Do not rely only on a thumbnail or the final frame.

Use this eight-point check:

  1. Playback: The file opens, plays continuously and contains the intended recording rather than an accidental clip.
  2. Capture interval: The documented motion is present from its required beginning through completion.
  3. Camera stability: The view does not jump, tilt, drift or change because the phone, mount, lens or zoom moved.
  4. Object stability: The object and its support do not shift independently of the platform.
  5. Framing and reference: The complete required subject and coded region remain visible with suitable margins.
  6. Focus and visibility: Required surfaces remain acceptably sharp and are not persistently hidden by an obstruction.
  7. Background and lighting: No person, moving object, flicker, large shadow, glare event or environmental change disrupts the capture.
  8. Method-specific evidence: Any additional observation required by the selected verified workflow is present and visible as instructed.

Reject and rerecord the source if it is incomplete, interrupted, cropped, unstable, visibly unsuitable or uncertain. Uploading a known bad source spends time on processing without correcting the missing observation.

Passing this inspection means that the video is ready for the next documented workflow. It does not prove that orientation decoding will succeed, every surface was observed, the reconstruction will be complete, the result will be accurate, or the final model will suit its intended use.

Keep the inspected original and continue according to the evidence path you intended to capture.

  • For a documented Vision workflow, continue to Create a Vision Scan.
  • For a documented laser-assisted acquisition, continue only through the verified Laser or Combo procedure, including every required recording and safety step.
  • If the source failed inspection, correct the cause, repeat the full-rotation station check and record again.

The recording and processing stages remain separate. A suitable source gives the platform observations to evaluate; uploading it does not guarantee a complete, accurate, watertight or downstream-ready model.
