Add the laser only through a verified setup
The optional ASCAND Laser Extension introduces a projected line into the capture relationship. The camera observes that line on the object, and laser triangulation uses the modeled relationship between camera ray and laser plane to derive surface samples.
That relationship makes the setup physically sensitive. The structural frame, camera alignment, laser holder, turntable and calibration arrangement must correspond to the current documented configuration and remain rigid during capture. A laser that appears straight or reaches the object is not necessarily geometrically aligned.
Laser equipment also requires product-specific safety information. Before installation or activation, obtain the current instructions for the exact supplied module and configuration. Those instructions must identify the module, classification, intended operation, power method, assembly, calibration, controlled area and applicable protective measures.
If any of that information is missing, stop with the laser off. This tutorial cannot replace the manufacturer’s safety information or the approved ASCAND procedure.
Understand why alignment matters
Verify the exact components and instructions
Begin with the laser de-energized and the components laid out for identification. Do not rely on resemblance to an older photograph, a 3D-print file or a previous Laser Extension version.
The documented system architecture assigns these functional roles:
- Structural body or frame: preserves the intended physical relationship around the turntable.
- Camera support and alignment element: holds the recording device in the documented pose relative to the frame.
- Laser holder: constrains the laser module in the designed position and orientation.
- Laser module: projects the line used for laser-derived observations.
- Coded turntable: rotates the object and provides orientation evidence.
- Calibration support: provides the applicable reference arrangement for determining or verifying geometry.
This functional list is not a promise that every item is included in every retail or downloadable configuration. Verify the exact current kit inventory, supported ASCAND configuration, phone or camera arrangement, supplied and user-provided parts, assembly revision and laser-module identity.
Also confirm that you have the current illustrated installation instructions, safety information and calibration procedure. If the module, mount or instructions do not clearly belong together, do not test whether they work by switching on the laser.
Review the Laser Extension’s system role
Install the structure with the laser de-energized
Perform mechanical installation only in the non-emitting state defined by the current instructions. Depending on the verified product, that may require disconnecting or removing a power source rather than relying only on a switch position.
Follow the current illustrated sequence for the exact hardware revision. It must establish:
- which structural parts attach to the applicable turntable setup;
- their orientation and assembly order;
- the correct fasteners, seating surfaces and retention method;
- how the camera support and alignment element are fitted;
- how the laser holder is installed;
- when the laser module may be inserted or connected; and
- how the completed structure is checked before calibration.
Do not force a part that does not seat as shown. Do not enlarge holes, bend a holder, add spacers, substitute a mount or tighten a printed component by guesswork. A modification may change the laser plane even when the assembly appears stable.
Inspect every structural part for cracks, deformation, loose joints or damage. Confirm that the frame sits securely, does not interfere with the turntable, and cannot shift during the intended rotation.

Establish the fixed camera and frame relationship
The installed extension must preserve a controlled relationship among the camera, laser holder and turntable. The object rotates; the camera and laser geometry remain fixed.
Mount the recording device only as specified for the current configuration. Check that it is held rigidly and that its body, controls, lens area and cables do not press against the alignment structure in a way that can change the pose.
Use the verified reference views to establish the intended orientation. Do not infer a universal phone tilt, distance or height from the supplied turntable photograph: it shows neither the extension nor a complete capture station.
Before considering laser activation, inspect the camera view:
- the complete object remains inside the frame through a full rotation;
- the required coded reference remains observable;
- the intended laser capture area lies within the usable image;
- the structural frame does not obscure required observations;
- focus can remain fixed and suitable;
- the background and illumination remain controlled; and
- no moving cable can disturb the camera or enter the turntable envelope.
Changing the camera pose after calibration changes the modeled geometry. If the device or mount moves, treat the setup as requiring the applicable reinspection and recalibration rather than continuing from an earlier accepted state.
Review fixed-camera preparation
Align only by the current calibration procedure
Mechanical installation places components into their intended relationship. Visual alignment checks whether the setup appears consistent with the reference views. Calibration establishes the parameters needed to interpret recorded observations. These are related but distinct steps.
Laser triangulation assumes a defined laser plane relative to the camera and turntable. A positional offset can systematically change reconstructed width or depth. A tilted plane can make dimensions vary with height. The resulting point cloud may still resemble the object while containing structured geometric error.
For that reason, do not align the holder by projecting a line onto an arbitrary wall, measuring an undocumented angle or adjusting the module until a preview looks plausible. A historical design value in engineering documentation is not automatically a current customer procedure.
Use only the current calibration target, holder, camera arrangement, software path and acceptance criteria documented for the exact configuration. Confirm:
- the target and holder are the correct revision;
- the camera and laser mounts have not moved;
- the procedure begins from the required non-emitting or controlled state;
- every activation step is covered by the safety instructions;
- the system reports or demonstrates the documented acceptance condition; and
- failed or uncertain calibration is corrected rather than accepted by appearance.
Calibration does not make unsuitable or occluded surfaces observable. It establishes the relationship used to reconstruct points that the camera can detect on the laser plane.

Establish the operating zone before activation
Do not activate the laser until the current product-specific safety information has been read and its controls are in place.
The verified instructions must establish:
- the exact laser module and its classification;
- intended use and prohibited use;
- correct power source, switching and shutdown;
- emitter location and expected beam path;
- the controlled operating area and access restrictions;
- supervision and bystander requirements;
- reflective-surface restrictions;
- any required protective measures; and
- the response to a loose mount, unexpected beam path or damaged component.
Never look into the emitter or intentionally direct the beam toward eyes. Do not use mirrors or improvised reflective targets to find the line. Do not substitute generic eyewear advice for protection specified for the actual wavelength, power and operating conditions. Do not infer age suitability, classroom use or legal compliance from the low purchase price or small size of a module.
Keep the laser off while people enter the operating area, while the object or hardware is adjusted, and whenever the setup is unattended, unless the authoritative instructions explicitly define another safe state.
If the beam could leave the intended capture area, encounter an uncontrolled reflective surface or be viewed by someone outside the controlled zone, do not proceed.
Complete a full-rotation dry run with the laser off
Before any active calibration or capture step, rotate the intended setup through the full planned range with the laser off.
Confirm:
- Structural rigidity: the frame, camera support and laser holder remain seated and motionless.
- Rotational clearance: the object and turntable do not contact the frame, holder, cables or other equipment.
- Object stability: the object does not slide, tip, flex or change pose.
- Camera framing: the complete object remains in view.
- Reference visibility: the required coded turntable region remains observable.
- Capture-area visibility: the surfaces intended for laser observation are not blocked from the camera by the structure.
- Cable control: no cable can pull a mount, cross the rotating envelope or create a trip hazard.
- Operating-zone readiness: access, supervision and environmental controls match the verified safety instructions.
- Procedure readiness: the correct calibration, activation, recording and shutdown instructions are present.
A dry run can reveal mechanical interference and visibility problems without introducing an active beam. It does not confirm laser-plane alignment, calibration, line detection, surface response or reconstruction quality.
If anything moves or becomes uncertain, correct one cause at a time and repeat the dry run from the beginning.
Continue only from a verified ready state
The Laser Extension is ready for the next documented stage only when the exact hardware is identified, the structure is correctly installed, the camera relationship is stable, the current calibration procedure is available, the safety gate is complete and the de-energized dry run passes.
- Every gate passes: Continue to the verified Laser or Combo capture procedure.
- A component, instruction or module identity is uncertain: Keep the laser off and obtain current documentation.
- The frame, camera or holder moves or does not match the reference: Correct the mechanical setup and repeat inspection.
- Calibration fails or the result shows systematic distortion: Use the Laser/Combo diagnostic route before recording more sources.
- The object cannot provide a visible, suitable laser trace from the required views: Reassess the method rather than improvising the optical path.
Laser and Combo are evidence choices, not automatic upgrades. They add setup, visibility and evaluation responsibilities along with their potential geometric observations.
