What Makes a Scan Video Suitable for 3D Reconstruction?

The video is not merely a presentation of the object. It is the capture evidence from which the system interprets changing views, object boundaries, coded rotation and—where applicable—the laser line.

A video can play normally and still be unsuitable for reconstruction. Suitability depends on whether it preserves the intended geometric relationship throughout the recording.

A suitable video preserves a controlled observation sequence

The recording should show one stable object completing the required rotation while the smartphone remains steadily positioned. The object, turntable, camera, lighting and background should behave consistently enough that changes between frames primarily represent controlled rotation.

Exact current recording controls belong in the operating tutorial. The underlying requirements are more durable: continuity, visibility, stability and readable evidence.

The object should rotate; the capture relationship should remain stable

Unintended camera movement changes the viewpoint independently of the coded turntable rotation. Object slip, wobble or deformation means different frames no longer describe one rigid object in the expected pose.

Use a stable support, keep the phone fixed and verify that the object remains secure throughout its rotational envelope.

Keep required evidence visible and readable

The full object and relevant turntable references should remain inside the frame. Focus should preserve boundaries and coded details. Exposure should avoid losing important regions to deep shadow or clipped highlights.

Check the entire rotation, not only the opening frame. An off-center object may move out of view later, and a protruding part may approach the frame edge as the turntable turns.

The coded turntable band supports rotational interpretation

The visible coded band provides structured information about turntable orientation. Obstruction, blur, poor focus, glare, cropping or weak visibility can reduce the usable rotational evidence.

The band is part of the capture system, not decoration. Keep it readable across the sequence according to the current setup guidance.

Inspect the recording before processing

Before upload, review the video for:

  • a complete and continuous rotation;
  • stable camera position;
  • no object slip or deformation;
  • full-object framing throughout the turn;
  • readable coded band;
  • consistent focus and exposure;
  • suitable background separation;
  • visible laser evidence when using a laser-assisted workflow.

If a fundamental capture defect is visible, recording again is usually more useful than expecting reconstruction or post-processing to replace missing evidence.
