Diagnose what the camera actually recorded
Capture troubleshooting begins with the setup and the complete source recording. If the object leaves the frame, the camera moves, the object shifts, the coded reference is obscured, or the image changes during rotation, the fault exists before reconstruction begins.
Start with the earliest place where the symptom is visible:
- Visible in the setup or source video: use the checks on this page.
- The source appears stable, but a Vision result is incomplete or distorted: use Vision Scan Problems.
- The symptom depends on a laser-enabled capture, alignment or calibration: use Laser and Combo Scan Problems.
- The source transferred incorrectly or processing did not reach a result: return to General Troubleshooting.
ASCAND uses a controlled relationship: the camera remains steady while the object rotates on the coded turntable. Troubleshooting should preserve and inspect that relationship. Walking around the object or moving the camera during recording creates a different acquisition geometry.
A later result may help reveal that something went wrong, but it does not prove the cause. Confirm the symptom in the source before changing the capture station.
Preserve the failing capture before changing the setup
Keep the original recording. Do not overwrite it with a new attempt or discard it after submitting a replacement.
Record:
- the source filename and recording date;
- the recording device and its orientation;
- the visible capture-station arrangement;
- the object and how it was placed or supported;
- the exact symptom;
- when the symptom first appears in the rotation; and
- every change already attempted.
Review the recording as recorded. Avoid trimming, stabilizing, reframing or applying automatic visual corrections to the only copy of the evidence. An edited clip may hide the movement, crop or exposure change you need to diagnose.
Create one comparison recording after changing one relevant variable. For example, correct the object position while keeping the camera, framing, lighting and recording method unchanged. If several conditions change together, a better result cannot show which correction mattered.

Check framing through the complete rotation
Open the full recording and inspect the beginning, several intermediate positions and the end. The complete object and the complete coded turntable should remain visible with clear margins throughout the rotation.
Look for:
- the top, side or a projecting feature of the object touching or leaving the frame;
- the outer edge or coded region of the turntable being cropped;
- a wide or asymmetric object fitting in one orientation but not another;
- the camera view changing after recording starts; or
- a support, hand or nearby object entering the required view.
Do not approve framing from the first frame alone. An object can appear comfortably inside the image initially and extend beyond it after turning. A still photograph cannot establish full-rotation framing.
If any required part leaves the frame, stop there. Reposition or reframe according to the current capture-station and recording instructions, then make a new complete test recording. Do not rely on processing to reconstruct evidence that the camera never captured.
No universal distance, angle or object limit should be inferred from an example image. The correct arrangement depends on the applicable ASCAND configuration and current instructions.

Separate camera movement from object movement
Camera and object movement affect different relationships.
To check the camera, compare fixed features near the image edges at several moments. If the whole view shifts, tilts or changes scale, the camera or its view changed. The turntable may still rotate correctly, but the observation geometry is no longer fixed.
To check the object, compare its base and supports with the same areas of the turntable. If the object slides, tips, flexes or changes its position independently of the turntable, the source no longer represents one rigid object in one stable placement.
Also inspect the transition into and out of rotation. Touching the phone, mount, table or object can introduce a movement that is easy to miss at normal playback speed.
Correct the observed relationship rather than guessing at a component:
- If the entire view moves, verify the camera and station under the current setup instructions.
- If the object moves relative to the turntable, correct its placement or support without hiding required evidence.
- If the surface itself bends, flutters or changes shape, decide whether the object can be captured as a stable subject.
Do not prescribe a mount, clamp, adhesive or stabilization setting from the symptom alone. Any support must be appropriate for the object and must not introduce an unverified handling, safety or conservation risk.
Understand why the camera remains steady.
Inspect object placement and coded-reference visibility
The coded outer region is a functional part of the ASCAND capture system. It is not decorative branding. It provides orientation evidence as the turntable rotates.
Review whether:
- the object remains stable on the rotating surface;
- its placement leaves the coded outer region visible;
- supports, labels, fingers or loose material block the reference;
- the object or support casts changing obstruction across it;
- the turntable surface or coded band is covered, damaged or visually unclear; and
- the object remains within the prepared capture area through every orientation.
An object that appears centered in one frame can still create an asymmetric framing or visibility problem later in the rotation. Conversely, visual centering alone does not prove that placement is correct. Use the complete recording and the current instructions for the installed configuration.
Do not invent a minimum number of visible codes, a numeric centering tolerance or a universal support method. If the applicable documentation does not make the required relationship clear, preserve photographs of the setup and ask Support before processing repeated attempts.
Check focus, exposure, lighting, background and occlusion
Inspect the object, turntable and coded reference at multiple points in the recording.
Soft focus or motion blur
Edges that remain soft may indicate that the required subject region was not recorded clearly. Blur that appears only during movement may instead relate to motion or changing capture conditions. Describe what you see; do not assume a camera fault from softness alone.
Clipped highlights or dark regions
Large white areas without visible variation, deep areas without separation, or abrupt exposure changes can remove useful visual evidence. Shiny, reflective, transparent or very dark surfaces may require a different preparation or method assessment.
Changing light
Look for flicker, moving shadows, changing reflections or large brightness shifts during rotation. Stable-looking illumination in one frame does not prove stable conditions across the sequence.
Weak object–background separation
Check whether the object boundary remains distinguishable in every orientation. A background that works for one side may merge with another surface later. Background choice should support separation without hiding the coded turntable.
Occlusion
Hands, tools, supports, cables or surrounding objects may cover the object or coded reference. Remove avoidable obstructions before recapture. Do not remove a support when doing so would make the object unstable or unsafe.
There is no universal device setting, light level or background color that solves every material. Use current instructions and compare the observable source. For difficult surfaces, review Object Suitability.
Validate the complete recording, not one frame
Before submitting a replacement, confirm:
- You can identify the intended source file.
- The recording uses the required device orientation.
- The complete object and coded turntable are visible at the beginning.
- Rotation proceeds without an unexplained interruption.
- The camera view remains steady.
- The object remains stable relative to the turntable.
- Framing, focus, exposure and lighting remain usable through intermediate positions.
- Required evidence is not blocked by hands, supports or surrounding objects.
- The ending does not introduce movement, cropping or an incomplete sequence.
This is source acceptance, not result certification. A recording can pass these checks and still encounter a method limitation, reconstruction problem or unsuitable result. It can also be rejected by a current platform rule that is not visible in the image. Keep acquisition, submission, processing and result evaluation as separate gates.

Correct, compare or escalate
Choose the next action from the evidence:
- A capture fault is visible: preserve the original, correct one variable and record a complete comparison.
- The source appears sound but the Vision result is wrong: go to Vision Scan Problems.
- The issue concerns laser visibility, installation, alignment or calibration: stop powered experimentation and use Laser and Combo Scan Problems under current product-specific safety instructions.
- The required setup relationship is unclear: check Documentation.
- The symptom remains reproducible after the published checks: contact Support.
For escalation, include the applicable ASCAND configuration, recording device, original source identity, a precise symptom description, the first time or orientation where it appears, and the one-variable tests already completed. Add a setup photograph only when it helps explain the geometry. Do not include passwords, payment details, unrelated personal information or third-party content that is not needed for diagnosis.
A corrected source removes an observed acquisition fault. It does not, by itself, prove reconstruction accuracy, completeness, print readiness or fitness for purpose.Good 3D scanning habits are rarely secret settings or universal shortcuts. They are small, controlled decisions that make the capture easier to understand, repeat and evaluate.
