ASCAND is the physical capture system and product family. It creates a controlled relationship between a recording device, a suitable object and the coded turntable while the object rotates.
3D-Scan.Online is the browser-based processing platform. It receives applicable ASCAND scan recordings, runs the selected reconstruction path and provides results for review and continued work.
The names are not interchangeable. ASCAND structures what is observed. 3D-Scan.Online processes those observations. Together they connect a physical object with an inspectable digital result.

ASCAND owns the physical capture stage
Every reconstruction begins with observations of a real object. ASCAND organizes how those observations are recorded.
In the standard workflow, the recording device remains steady while the object rotates on the coded turntable. This controlled relationship reduces the uncontrolled camera movement associated with a handheld path and provides visible orientation context throughout the recording.
The physical system may include different components according to the selected capture method. Their common responsibility is acquisition: keeping the relevant object evidence visible, stable and related to the structured rotation.
ASCAND does not finish the online reconstruction inside the turntable. The recording produced during capture is not already a mesh, CAD model or print-ready part. It is source material: a sequence of visual observations that the later processing stage can interpret.
This distinction helps users diagnose a project correctly. If framing changes, the camera moves, the object shifts independently or important evidence is not visible in the source, the first problem belongs to capture. Repeating an online operation cannot create observations that were never recorded.

3D-Scan.Online owns the browser processing stage
After capture, the applicable recording is brought into a project through the browser-based 3D-Scan.Online platform.
The platform connects the submitted source with the selected processing path. Depending on the documented method, processing may interpret orientation, image, silhouette or laser-derived evidence, construct geometric representations, generate a mesh and prepare available results for inspection or download.
That work is reconstruction, not ordinary file conversion. A video contains observations of an object; it does not contain a finished 3D surface waiting behind another filename extension.
3D-Scan.Online therefore has a different responsibility from the physical system. It manages the project and processing environment, exposes the resulting geometry for review and provides the available outputs for continued work. It does not physically observe the object, control the original setup or correct every weakness in the recorded evidence.
Processing completion means that a workflow reached a result state. It does not, by itself, prove that every necessary surface was observed, that the model is dimensionally accurate or that it is suitable for a particular downstream task.

The ASCAND scan recording is the handoff between physical capture and online processing.
It preserves what the recording device observed as the object completed its structured rotation. That includes the object evidence relevant to the selected method and the visible context needed to interpret the sequence.
This makes the source recording an important part of project provenance. Preserve it even after upload. If a later result contains a missing region, distortion or unwanted geometry, the source helps establish whether the symptom was already visible during acquisition or first appeared during a later transformation.
The handoff also explains why both parts of the system matter. A carefully structured capture gives processing interpretable observations; an appropriate processing path turns those observations into geometry that can be inspected. Neither responsibility can be skipped by renaming the other stage. The turntable does not contain a finished model, and the browser cannot return to the physical scene to collect a missing view. The continuity comes from preserving the relationship among object, recording, method, project and result.
A useful troubleshooting sequence follows the same direction as the workflow:
- inspect the physical setup and preserved recording;
- confirm that the correct source entered the correct project;
- identify whether processing completed for the intended method;
- compare the reconstructed result with the source evidence; and
- isolate any later mesh, export or destination-application change.
Uploading the recording moves evidence into the processing stage. It does not prove that the evidence is complete, and it does not repair an observation that capture never contained.

Source, project, result and derivative are different things
A complete workflow produces several related but distinct artifacts.
- The physical object is the real subject being observed.
- The source recording preserves the capture observations.
- The platform project relates submitted material to a selected workflow.
- The reconstructed result is geometry calculated from the available evidence.
- The downloaded output packages a selected representation and its supported attributes.
- A derivative is a later version created through editing, repair, conversion, merging or preparation for another use.
Keeping these stages distinct protects the evidence chain. A smoother derivative does not improve the original recording. Hole filling can create a closed surface but cannot prove that the filled shape matches an unseen part of the object. A successful import into another application proves that the file could be interpreted there, not that the source was complete or the reconstruction accurate.
The practical rule is simple: preserve the earliest artifact and compare each later transformation with the last acceptable representation. Correct the earliest confirmed fault instead of asking a downstream stage to hide it.

Do not rely on older references to credits, tokens, prices or entitlements. They may describe a previous commercial model even when the underlying capture-to-processing relationship remains the same.

ASCAND physical capture
ASCAND can structure the relationship among the recording device, rotating object and visible references. It can help users create repeatable source material. It cannot guarantee that every surface is visible, every object is suitable or every recording contains sufficient evidence.
3D-Scan.Online processing
3D-Scan.Online can interpret applicable submitted evidence through the selected workflow and prepare reviewable geometric results. It cannot physically observe a hidden surface, recover every missing observation or certify an intended downstream use merely because processing completed.
The connected workflow
Together, the two stages can move a suitable physical object into an inspectable digital workflow. That does not automatically establish dimensional accuracy, completeness, print readiness, parametric CAD structure, engineering fitness, conservation suitability or permission to scan and reproduce the object.
Those questions require their own evidence, review and—where appropriate—responsible institutional or rights-holder decisions.
This is especially important when a result will guide fabrication, repair, comparison, teaching or public presentation. The next task determines what must be checked. A model that is sufficient for visual exploration may still be unsuitable as a dimensional reference. A mesh that can be printed may still contain inferred surfaces. Evaluation belongs between reconstruction and use, even when the workflow has otherwise operated as intended.
